The official IB country page shows a large Diploma Programme presence in China, but the network is spread across major metropolitan regions and school access policies vary. Shanghai and Beijing therefore need separate search plans.

Choose a city and realistic travel area

Do not treat intercity high-speed rail as a substitute for a local plan. Reporting times, identity checks, multiple exam days and accommodation can make a distant school impractical even when the train journey looks short.

China: filter for the Diploma Programme before comparing cities

The IB’s China directory covers more than one programme. A PYP or MYP entry is not evidence of a DP examination route. Start with the Diploma Programme filter, then treat Shanghai and Beijing as separate venue enquiries. Directory presence is only the first check, not a count of available retake places.

Check the local primary source

• Create a short record for each response: city, exact subjects and levels, session, examination language and whether external registration is possible.
• Ask what identity or residency documents the receiving school requires for your own circumstances; do not transfer another candidate’s eligibility to yourself.
• Only compare travel after there is a plausible registration route. Keep local venue details in Chinese and confirm the local calendar time rather than your home-country time.

Prepare a registration-ready file

A useful request states the registered subject name, HL or SL, May or November session, answer language, previous candidate details and any access-arrangement or component question. Vague requests make it harder for a coordinator to judge feasibility.

School internal cutoffs can be earlier than the final registration timetable. Begin early, keep documents ready and do not book non-refundable travel until a school has confirmed the venue and dates.

Check the admissions consequence

If the retake supports an application outside China, confirm how the destination university records pending results and the latest acceptable result date. The host school cannot decide recognition on the university's behalf.

Limits of any location search

No country page can prove that a place is currently available. IB World School authorisation, participation in a particular exam session and willingness to register an external candidate are different facts.
