This guide turns a broad search for an IB retake in Shanghai into decisions you can verify. It does not publish school availability or claim that any named school accepts private candidates.
Start with your exact subjects, HL or SL, target session, answer language and travel limit. A place exists only when an authorised school confirms that exact combination in writing.
Shanghai's authorised IB programmes are spread across a very large municipality. The official directory does not reveal external-candidate policy, so the useful unit is the exact school, subject and session.
Measure journeys from the candidate's address at exam-hour traffic levels. Pudong and Puxi searches may produce very different commutes; repeated cross-city travel can justify temporary accommodation near the venue.
The Huangpu River and Shanghai's scale make a single city travel area misleading. Classify a possible venue as Pudong, Puxi or an outer district, then test the actual metro and road journey from the candidate's address at the required arrival time.
The Shanghai government transport guide distinguishes metro, suburban rail and airport links, including transfers that can use separate fare arrangements. Record the named station, exit and final walking or taxi leg rather than saving only a map pin.
Keep the venue address in Chinese characters as well as the translated version. A candidate arriving from abroad should check mobile data, accepted payment method and the route before exam morning instead of assuming every foreign app or card will work identically.
Confirm examination language and identity documents with the coordinator. If results support an overseas application, ask that university how pending and final results are supplied; local transport and international admissions are separate workstreams.
Choose May or November using both school availability and the date your university needs the result. A school may participate in one session but not accept your subjects, level or external status.
Prepare a clean registration file before outreach. Ask the accepting coordinator which previous candidate details and component records can be retrieved; do not assume an IA or coursework arrangement follows from exam hosting.
If the retake supports an application outside China, confirm how the destination university records pending results and the latest acceptable result date. The host school cannot decide recognition on the university's behalf.
Ask the admissions office which result, evidence and deadline control your case. Do this before paying for travel or treating a host-school search as proof that an offer can still be met.
| Travel option | Use it when | Verify before accepting |
|---|---|---|
| Same side of the Huangpu | Metro route avoids a cross-river transfer | Station exit, final distance and morning service |
| Pudong–Puxi crossing | The confirmed venue justifies a transfer | Peak-time duration, backup route and all paper dates |
| Outer district or temporary stay | Subject/session availability outweighs commute | Suburban fare, Chinese address, accommodation and return |
Use the official IB school finder to verify current authorisation, then seek a direct answer for external-candidate hosting. School names, capacity and acceptance stay private until a real offer is made.
IBretake is an independent paid search service. It does not administer IB exams, award grades, decide university recognition or promise that a school will accept the request.
