May 2027 IB retake timeline: the M27 planning guide

M27 means the May 2027 IB examination session. It gives more preparation time than November 2026, but the extra months only help if a host school, subject plan and registration are secured early.

The IB's May 2026 schedule included a planning note for exams from Friday 23 April to Wednesday 19 May 2027, with no exams on 1 May. That range was explicitly subject to confirmation. As of 4 August 2026, the public schedule page does not yet publish the final May 2027 subject timetable, so verify every paper date with the accepting coordinator.

August–September 2026: define the retake

Start with the official result, not a vague target. Record subject, level, grade, marks to the next boundary, curriculum or course code, candidate session number and the university condition you are trying to meet.

Decide whether a Category 1 EUR is realistic, but do not wait for it before checking M27 availability when timing matters. A remark and a host-school search can run in parallel until one route solves the problem.

September–December 2026: secure a host school

A private candidate cannot register directly with the IB. An IB World School must accept the candidate and confirm the exact subject, level, language, session and curriculum. Availability differs even between nearby schools.

Do not treat an enquiry or payment receipt as official registration. Ask when the school will confirm acceptance, what documents it needs, its internal cutoff, where exams take place and how it handles timetable conflicts or access arrangements.

January–February 2027: close the registration risks

By this stage, the goal is not more browsing; it is a complete school file. Confirm the registered name, date of birth, candidate details, every subject and level, fee status and the coordinator contact who will issue exam instructions.

Schools set internal deadlines before the IB workflow closes, and late changes may be restricted or cost more. There is no safe universal student deadline: use the date in writing from the accepting school.

March–April 2027: timetable, travel and exam readiness

Use the final subject timetable supplied by the coordinator, not the provisional window alone. Book travel only after the exam centre and dates are confirmed, and arrive with enough buffer for identity checks and local disruptions.

Build revision around actual papers and time zones. Confirm permitted calculators, stationery, access arrangements, reporting time and the contact route for urgent exam-day issues.

Provisional 23 April–19 May 2027 exam window

The planning range in the May 2026 IB schedule begins Friday 23 April and ends Wednesday 19 May 2027, with no examinations planned for Saturday 1 May. It is useful for broad travel and university planning, but it is not a substitute for the final timetable.

The public IB schedule page currently lists timetables only through November 2026. This article needs rechecking when the final May 2027 PDF is published; the accepting school remains the operational source for your papers.

After the exams: results and university handoff

Before results, tell the coordinator which universities or admissions centres should receive the official transcript. Give admissions the expected result window and ask whether a conditional offer, deferral or document deadline needs a separate update.

When results arrive, check the full Diploma conditions as well as the new subject grade. A higher subject result may still need an official transcript before the university can act.

Retake questions

What does M27 mean in IB?
M27 means the May 2027 IB examination session.
When are May 2027 IB exams?
A prior IB planning note gave 23 April–19 May 2027, with no exams on 1 May, but marked it subject to confirmation. Use the final timetable from your coordinator.
Can I register myself for M27?
No. An accepting IB World School must register the candidate for the correct subjects, levels and session.
When should I find an M27 retake school?
Start in 2026. Schools have limited capacity and internal cutoffs that can be much earlier than the final IB workflow dates.
Should I choose M27 or N26?
N26 is faster; M27 offers more preparation time and may have broader school availability. Compare university timing, subjects, travel and confirmed places.
