IB retakes in Asia: how to find a suitable host school
A regional guide to confirming external retake acceptance, transferring assessment information and comparing the complete cost and logistics of an examination stay.
For an IB retake in Asia, first confirm your session, subjects and levels with a school willing to accept your registration. Choose a destination once those requirements are clear.
Quick answer: search by your exact retake requirements, confirm acceptance with the proposed host’s IB coordinator, and obtain written registration and coursework instructions before committing to travel. Availability depends on the individual school and examination session.
1. Start with the session and subject, then choose the destination
The IB runs two examination sessions each year, May and November. That is the starting point for a regional search, not a promise that a particular school offers both. Your first enquiry should include the intended session and year, the full subject name, HL or SL, and the response language. IB results guidance
Be precise about similarly named courses. Mathematics: analysis and approaches and Mathematics: applications and interpretation are different requests; so are Language A: literature and Language A: language and literature. Copy the details from your existing results documentation instead of shortening them to “maths” or “English.”
For November 2026, the official timetable runs from 23 October to 13 November. As of this guide’s review on 24 October 2026, that session has already started. These dates are for candidates already registered. For later sessions, ask the coordinator for the current applicable schedule. Official November 2026 timetable
2. Understand what a school search actually proves
An authorized school and an available retake host are different things. The IB permits retakes at another eligible IB World School, subject to restrictions, but schools are not obliged to accept retake candidates. Fees are set by schools independently. A directory entry establishes neither an open seat nor a quotation. IB retake guidance
Use the IB World School directory to check programme authorization and contact details. Its filters include country or territory and programme, which makes it useful for checking a shortlist. Then ask the school specifically whether it will accept an external retake candidate for your exact combination.
Begin with locations you can realistically reach. If the first enquiries cannot meet your requirements, broaden the search to other cities or countries. Compare actual coordinator replies rather than assuming a large number of international schools means easier access.
3. Use the data for context, not a prediction of your chances
The IB’s November 2025 provisional bulletin counted 23,006 students, 1,501 schools and 134 countries worldwide; 15.7% of students were registered in the retake category. Those figures show that retakes form an established part of the session. They do not identify schools accepting external students today. IB November 2025 provisional bulletin, pages 3 to 4
These are historical global counts from a specifically identified provisional edition. The IB also publishes a final November 2025 bulletin through its statistical bulletin index. Neither edition measures current retake vacancies, and a global pass rate would not predict your personal result.
Avoid choosing a host because a school appears high in a results league table. The IB does not publish or endorse school rankings. For this decision, the practical question is whether the school can register and support your particular retake. IB assessment FAQ
4. Connect your original coordinator with the proposed host
Ask your original coordinator which previous results and component information the receiving school needs, and ask the proposed host how it wants that information supplied. Keep the full subject and session details consistent in both conversations.
Do not assume that internal assessment work automatically carries forward or must automatically be replaced. The IB directs candidates to their coordinator for that decision, and curriculum changes can mean new requirements. Obtain a separate explanation for each subject before arranging preparation or paying for travel. IB retake guidance
If you have existing access arrangements, raise them early and ask the host how they will be implemented. The IB’s policy contains specific provisions for anticipated and retake students; the school should check the applicable authorization and supporting information. 5. Compare the whole journey and the full quotation
Build a schedule around every registered paper, including gaps between subjects. Add a sensible arrival buffer, check the route from accommodation to the actual examination venue, and keep a backup transport option.
Use the host’s local reporting time. For example, the November 2026 timetable lists 09:30 and 13:30 for schools allocated to exam zone A at UTC+8. Other rows differ; Asia does not have one universal examination start time. The school’s allocated zone matters. Official timetable, page 6
Request a written total with inclusions, payment dates and cancellation terms. Add accommodation, local transport, meals and any required preparation to your own budget. For international travel, check current entry requirements through the destination’s official government channels for your nationality and circumstances.
6. Get written confirmation from the school
Search in your preferred Asian countries; each request depends on school, subject and session acceptance. IBretake matches candidates with schools; it does not provide tuition or coursework supervision. Create an account to begin your search.
Use this comparison before treating an option as ready:
| Check | Evidence to obtain |
|---|---|
| Candidate acceptance | Written reply for your session and subjects |
| Registration | School instructions and confirmation of entry |
| Coursework | Component decisions and school deadlines |
| Cost | Itemized quotation and payment terms |
| Attendance | Venue, reporting times and all paper dates |
| University timing | Confirmation of when updated results are needed |
The IB sends official transcripts to higher education institutions; ask the coordinator about the relevant requests and timelines, then confirm your university’s own requirements directly. IB transcript guidance
Frequently asked questions
Can I retake in a different Asian country from my original school?
Potentially. The receiving school must agree and confirm the applicable registration and assessment requirements. Being overseas does not itself establish eligibility or availability.
Does an IB school listing mean I can book an exam there?
No. Check authorization, then obtain explicit acceptance for your intended retake. A search result is a starting point for an enquiry.
Is November always the better session for an Asia retake?
Choose around subject availability, preparation time, host acceptance and university timing. Geography alone does not determine the right session.
Can I use a morning start time from another country’s guide?
Use your host’s reporting instructions and applicable official timetable. Confirm the date and time in the venue’s local time before making transport plans.
