IB retakes in Europe: how to find a suitable school

A practical regional guide to school acceptance, session fit and planning a European IB retake.

To find an IB retake school in Europe, check which schools can register your subjects, at your levels, for your intended examination session. Confirm those details before choosing a city.

This guide explains how to compare European options without mistaking an IB World School listing for an available examination place. Start with your original coordinator, build a practical shortlist, then use IBretake’s school search to explore schools and make a specific enquiry.

IBretake has already arranged confirmed placements in Europe. Each new request still needs school, subject and session confirmation.

Check each school’s acceptance policy

Europe brings together different countries, school calendars and school admissions policies. A school’s international reputation or strong examination results do not establish that it will host an external retake candidate.

The IB’s retake guidance says candidates may retake at an IB World School offering the Diploma Programme or Career-related Programme, subject to restrictions. Crucially, schools are not obliged to accept retake candidates. Ask for confirmation of your individual registration rather than a general statement that the school “offers IB”.

School authorization is specific to each programme. Use the official IB school finder to check the relevant programme, then confirm policy on external candidates directly with the coordinator. A directory entry is a starting point for investigation.

What the numbers can tell you

The IB reported 209,607 students receiving DP and CP results in May 2026, an increase of 3.7% from the previous year. These are worldwide figures, not European retake registrations or available seats. Official July 2026 results announcement.

For a regional comparison, the May 2025 final statistical bulletin reports that IB Africa, Europe and the Middle East represented 37.9% of participating schools and 24.7% of students in that session. That administrative region includes Africa and the Middle East: calling either percentage “Europe’s share” would be misleading. Neither figure measures willingness to accept external candidates. The IB’s bulletin index also lists the newer May 2026 provisional edition. For a fuller explanation of populations and denominators, read our May 2026 statistical bulletin analysis.

Choose the session before the destination

The IB holds two examination sessions each year: May and November. That does not mean every European school can register every subject in both. The official examination schedule page directs candidates to their school coordinator to establish which timetable applies.

As of 24 October 2026, the November 2026 examination session is already underway: its final timetable begins on 23 October. For a future retake, confirm the school’s acceptance and registration requirements early.

Once a school is considering your enquiry, request the dates for every relevant paper, the local reporting time and the campus address. Plan your stay around your own timetable. A public session window is not a personalized schedule, and a nearby school may use a different campus for examinations.

Compare workable schools, then compare locations

Build a small shortlist you can realistically attend. The table below is a planning framework, not a ranking of countries or a claim that any option has places.

Search optionWhy investigate it?What to resolve first
Your original schoolThe coordinator already knows your assessment historyWhether it accepts your retake registration
Another school in your countryIt may simplify travel and communicationExternal-candidate policy, subjects and session
A school in a neighbouring countryIt may broaden your practical shortlistRegistration fit, accommodation and travel requirements
A more distant European schoolIt may be worth considering if closer options do not workTotal cost and an achievable attendance plan

Compare the complete written quotation, including any administration or supervision charges, with accommodation and transport. Ask what is refundable and when payment is required. Avoid choosing on an advertised examination fee alone; the IB says schools set their own retake fees.

Make the academic handover specific

Prepare one clear enquiry with your previous session, school, exact subject names, HL or SL level, intended session and any assessment support you require. Keep your original coordinator involved so the receiving school can identify what information it needs.

Do not assume that internal assessment can automatically carry forward. The IB directs candidates to the programme coordinator for that decision. It also warns that a subject affected by a recent curriculum change must follow the new curriculum. Those checks matter before you commit to preparation resources or travel.

If you need access arrangements, raise this at the beginning. The IB access and inclusion policy gives schools responsibilities for arranging support and equipment. Ask the prospective host what documentation and arrangements it needs to put in place; do not assume previous arrangements transfer automatically.

IBretake provides a paid service to help students find schools, not tutoring or supervision of new coursework. Check those needs with a school before relying on an arrangement covering only the examinations.

Get written confirmation from the school

Use IBretake’s school search to explore European schools, then obtain written confirmation covering the school’s acceptance, subjects, session, assessment requirements, charges and next steps. An enquiry, listing or previous candidate’s experience is not your registration confirmation.

Check your university’s position separately if the retake supports an application. Ask whether it will consider the later result and when it needs official evidence. The IB transcript guidance explains how results are sent directly to institutions. Leave time for that process as well as the examinations.

Before paying for travel that cannot be refunded, resolve the practical details: who will communicate with you, where you must attend, and which confirmation you should keep. Check travel and entry requirements with the relevant official authorities for your circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Can I retake at any IB school in Europe?

A school must offer the relevant programme and agree to accept your individual registration. IB authorization alone does not establish availability for an external candidate.

Is one European country easier for retakes?

There is no basis here to rank countries by examination difficulty. Choose by academic fit, school acceptance and manageable attendance arrangements.

Does a school’s past acceptance guarantee a place?

No. Confirm your intended session, subjects and assessment requirements directly, even if someone previously retook there.

Should I book travel as soon as I find a school?

Wait until the school has confirmed the relevant arrangements in writing and you understand payment and cancellation conditions.
