IB retakes in North America: finding the right exam school

A practical guide to finding a suitable IB retake school in North America, with official data and a checklist for external candidates.

To retake IB exams in the United States, Canada or Mexico, you need a school that accepts external candidates for your subjects and session. An IB World School listing alone does not confirm that the school will register you.

Create a student account to use the IBretake school search, starting with your preferred countries. Subject and session acceptance depend on the receiving school; obtain written confirmation for your individual registration. This guide explains what to compare before you commit to travel or pay a school. Information was checked on 24 October 2026; it is general planning guidance, not a statement that a particular school has a place available.

1. Read the regional numbers correctly

The IB's United States country page lists 932 schools offering the Diploma Programme. Its Canada page lists 188. These are programme-authorization counts checked on 24 October 2026, not counts of schools accepting external candidates. A school may offer more than one IB programme, so adding programme totals does not produce a reliable total number of distinct schools. Sources: IB in the United States and IB in Canada.

For a US search, compare a manageable local area before expanding across states. For Canada, compare the province, travel distance and communication language. For Mexico, begin with cities you can realistically reach and ask about the language of the examination, not simply the language spoken by the office. These are search-planning suggestions; they do not imply a particular city, school or country has confirmed availability.

The IB's 2025 Canada research announcement reported that 41% of Canadian IB World Schools primarily taught in French. That figure covers IB World Schools generally, not just Diploma Programme schools or retake hosts. It is a useful reason to check language carefully. Read the IB's Canada research summary.

2. Establish who will actually register you

The IB's retake guidance permits future-session retakes at eligible DP or CP schools, subject to restrictions. Schools do not have to accept retake candidates. Ask the receiving programme coordinator whether they can register your particular case.

Registration is a school responsibility. The 2026 general regulations explain that the registering school must accept academic and administrative responsibility for a retake student. A friendly reply from a general admissions inbox is therefore not the same as registration confirmation. Ask who owns your case, what they still need, and when they will confirm the completed entry.

3. Choose a session before choosing a journey

The DP and CP have two examination sessions each year: May and November. That does not mean each school will administer your requested retake in both sessions. Start with the session you can prepare for and the deadline imposed by the receiving school. IB results guidance.

The final November 2026 timetable runs 23 October to 13 November. As of this guide's review date, that session has already begun; the published timetable is not evidence that a new candidate can still register. For a later session, obtain the relevant official schedule and coordinator confirmation instead of assuming the same dates will repeat. See our November 2026 timetable guide and the official IB PDF.

For travel, request the school's allocated exam zone and local start times. The November 2026 timetable gives local start times and says they do not need a daylight-saving adjustment. Confirm the applicable times for your own session with the school. Record the venue's local time in your calendar and use the school's arrival instructions; avoid converting a remembered time from a previous school.

4. Give the coordinator a useful academic handover

Make your first enquiry easy to assess. State the exact subject title, HL or SL, examination language, previous examination session and intended retake session. Mathematics pathways and language-course titles should be written out, not reduced to an ambiguous shorthand.

Ask your previous coordinator how assessment records can be passed securely to the receiving school. Separately, ask the new coordinator which existing coursework can be used and whether additional assessment is necessary. The IB directs questions about internal assessment to the coordinator; curriculum changes can require the new curriculum. Confirm your arrangements individually. IB retake guidance.

5. Compare school fees, travel and accommodation

Request an itemized school quote in its stated currency. Ask what is included, when payment is due, and what happens if registration cannot be completed. Schools set their own fees; obtain the receiving coordinator's quote rather than assuming a standard regional price. IB fee guidance.

Build your own comparison before making bookings that cannot be refunded:

Item to confirmWhat to record
Registration and administrationWritten quote, currency, inclusions and refund terms
Subject fitExact subject, level, language and assessment arrangements
Exam attendanceEvery paper date, venue, local time and arrival instructions
Journey and accommodationTotal stay, transport between papers and change conditions
DocumentsRequired identification and any independently checked entry requirements

These are budgeting categories, not published school charges. A higher school fee may still lead to a lower overall cost if you can stay nearby or avoid repeated journeys.

6. Connect the retake to your university plan

Before choosing a session, ask the relevant admissions office when it needs your revised official results and whether those results can be considered for your intended entry point. Keep the response with your retake paperwork. Do not assume that all North American universities use the same admissions or credit policy.

The IB can send official transcripts directly to higher education institutions. Its current guidance allows up to six institutions to be selected through the coordinator before results release; eligible advance requests are free. Later requests involve fees. Arrange the appropriate request for your retake session and allow processing time rather than treating an emailed screenshot as the final document. IB transcript guidance.

7. Use a shortlist that records evidence

Start your school search with the countries and cities that fit your academic and travel plan. Cross-check programme authorization in the official IB school directory, which supports country, state or province, language and programme filters. Authorization is one check; acceptance of external candidates is a separate question for the school.

Before treating a place as secured, collect written confirmation of: your acceptance, the exact registered subjects and session, coursework requirements, school deadlines, the full quote, and examination attendance instructions. Keep a backup enquiry active until you know the first option can actually register you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I retake in North America if I studied elsewhere?

Potentially, subject to the IB's restrictions and the receiving school's decision. Ask its coordinator to review your previous registration and intended subjects.

Does a DP school have to accept an external retake candidate?

No. Confirm acceptance directly with the school for your subject and session.

Must I repeat my internal assessment?

Ask the coordinator to confirm your individual assessment arrangements, including curriculum changes and any permitted carry-forward.

Does retaking automatically satisfy my university conditions?

No promise can be made from a regional guide. Ask the institution about its deadline and how revised results will be considered, then arrange the official IB transcript through the appropriate channel.
