Students often describe this as 'failing the IB', but the official result is more precise: the Diploma was not awarded in that session. Your individual subject results still matter, and the next step depends on the exact failed condition.
You normally retain DP course results for completed subjects and core components. First identify why the Diploma was not awarded, then compare a results review, a targeted retake and university alternatives. You usually do not need to repeat all six subjects.

The wording matters when speaking to universities. State the awarded subject grades and that the Diploma was not awarded, then give any confirmed remark or retake plan. Do not describe a future retake as registered until a school has accepted and completed registration.
The overall total is only one test. A candidate can have 24 or more points and still miss the Diploma because of a grade 1, too many grades of 2 or 3, insufficient HL or SL points, an E in TOK or the Extended Essay, an unawarded component, or incomplete CAS.
Ask the coordinator for a condition-by-condition explanation. A generic 'you missed by one point' can hide whether the issue is the overall total, an HL subtotal, the core, or a specific subject boundary.
If one externally assessed subject sits close to the next grade, ask about a Category 1 EUR. It re-marks existing external work and can raise, leave or lower the subject result. The school submits it with consent and may set a deadline before the published IB cutoff.
A remark is not a general appeal against disappointment. Compare marks needed, distance above the lower boundary, eligible components and the admissions deadline before paying.
A retake gives a new exam-session attempt. Since the old three-session restriction was removed in 2023, there is no universal three-attempt cap, but a host school still has to accept the candidate, offer the correct subject and level, work under the relevant curriculum and meet registration deadlines.
Choose the smallest sensible set of subjects. If one HL grade would lift both the HL subtotal and the overall total, that subject may solve two conditions. If the issue is an E in TOK or EE, the coordinator must explain what can be carried forward or repeated; do not assume an exam-only host can supervise new core work.
Contact admissions quickly with facts: current official grades, the failed condition, any pending EUR, proposed retake subjects and the expected results session. Policies differ; a university may hold, revise, defer or withdraw an offer, or consider a foundation route.
Request official transcripts through the proper IB channel rather than sharing a candidate PIN. If a new result is pending, ask the institution exactly which official update it needs and by what date.
Separate the academic problem from the administrative one. First establish the exact result; then contact the coordinator, university and possible host schools in parallel where deadlines are close. Avoid paying before you understand what grade change would actually fix.
