Can You Take IB and AP Together in Shanghai?
Taking AP alongside the IB can be possible in Shanghai, but your plan needs three separate checks: your school’s permission, an AP provider that accepts your candidate category, and a timetable you can sustain. An extra qualification is useful only when it serves a clear academic purpose.
Start with the purpose of the extra exam
Write down what the AP would change: a named university requirement, a particular credit policy, or access to a subject absent from your IB choices. Ask the university to confirm how it treats your exact combination. Do not assume that another exam automatically improves an application or duplicates university credit.
The Diploma Programme combines six subjects with TOK, the extended essay and CAS. Students take three or four subjects at higher level. Published teaching allocations are 240 hours for HL and 150 for SL; these describe instruction, not recommended weekly homework.
For a conventional three-HL, three-SL combination, 3 × 240 + 3 × 150 = 1,170 subject teaching hours across the programme. That calculation excludes the core and independent work. It shows why an AP should be assessed as an addition to an existing commitment, even when topics overlap.
School permission and an exam place are different decisions
College Board distinguishes authorized international-school testing from local centers managed by Prometric. International schools typically examine their own pupils. Contact the AP coordinator before October preceding the exam year and check the provider’s registration window; school approval alone does not secure an external place.
Prometric’s 2026–27 rules allow eligible non-affiliated secondary candidates, including pupils at schools without AP. For this route, candidates must intend to use AP for university admission; enrichment alone is insufficient. AP-school pupils register through school. AP Research requires authorized-course enrollment; non-affiliated candidates cannot take AP Seminar or Computer Science Principles. State your school, year group and intended subjects when asking about eligibility. If you do not clearly fit the published categories, request written clarification before purchasing preparation or arranging travel.

Check the syllabus before calling it an easy extra
College Board generally permits AP exams without the corresponding course, but some assessments have additional coursework or digital-portfolio requirements. Discuss these with the ordering coordinator. General self-study permission does not override local eligibility or subject restrictions.
Compare the current AP course description with the IB topics you have actually learned. Divide a practice assessment into familiar content, unfamiliar content and unfamiliar question formats. A shared subject name does not establish full coverage. Record what still requires teaching, feedback or supervised submission, then estimate your own preparation time.
Three hypothetical workload checks
These examples are arithmetic exercises, not study-hour recommendations or measured student results. Replace every assumption with your own calendar. Available time means time remaining after lessons, sleep, travel, existing homework and other commitments.

- Choose one representative week and one deadline-heavy week; an average can hide the bottleneck.
- Agree a review point before any non-refundable commitment, using completed work rather than optimism.
- If the extra AP has no clear purpose and displaces essential IB work, postpone or remove it from the plan.
Put both exam systems on one calendar
Use the official schedule for the examination year and the instructions from each coordinator. Record each IB paper and AP assessment, its local reporting time, location, travel allowance and any portfolio deadline. Check every paper, not simply the subject’s first date.
A calendar clash is a question for both coordinators before payment. Do not build a plan around an assumed late sitting or private rescheduling. Ask what is actually available for your subject and reason, and keep the answer. Also plan the day before each exam: two technically compatible sessions may leave an unrealistic journey or recovery period.
A checklist before committing
- Define the AP’s purpose and save the relevant university policy.
- Obtain school approval and confirm the correct AP registration route.
- Verify subject availability, candidate eligibility, required coursework and identification.
- Record registration, payment, cancellation and submission conditions from the current provider.
- Resolve timetable conflicts and test the workload against an IB deadline week.
- Retain entry confirmations; buying a course or creating an account is not the same as confirmed exam entry.
