IB remark deadline 2026: dates, timeline and grade risk

Work to the school’s cutoff and confirm submission

The school’s cutoff is when it needs your decision, consent and payment. The IB’s deadline is for the school’s submitted request. Ask for written confirmation of category, subject, session and submission status; an email or payment receipt alone does not prove the EUR was entered.

Suppose a school requires consent and payment by 10 March 2027 for a November 2026 Category 1 request. Work to 10 March, even though the IB window closes on 15 March. This is a hypothetical school cutoff, not a date that applies to every school.

May and November 2026: EUR request windows

The current Category 1 instructions and Category 3 instructions give different November opening dates:

• May 2026, Categories 1 and 3: 5 July–15 September 2026; this window is closed.
• November 2026, Category 1: 16 December 2026–15 March 2027.
• November 2026, Category 3: 3 January–15 March 2027.

Missed the school cutoff? Contact the coordinator promptly to ask what, if anything, can still be submitted within the IB window. A direct email to the IB does not replace the school’s request.

Keep the university’s evidence deadline separate. A request submitted before the IB closing date is not guaranteed to finish before an admissions decision; ask admissions what it accepts while a result is under review.

What to request before deciding

Ask the coordinator for the current grade, scaled total mark, both adjacent boundaries and any relevant component breakdown. The candidate portal does not display individual component marks; school-provided information is needed for that detail.

Boundary distances show the change needed to reach another grade; they do not show that marking is wrong or predict success. Review the component evidence against the original assessment standard, including the consequence of falling below the lower boundary.

How long an IB remark takes

The current instructions ask the examiner to finish a Category 1 re-mark within two days after allocation. School submission, allocation, checks and communication take additional time; this is not a two-day guarantee from your request.

Record the actual submission date and ask the coordinator for the current estimate. Give the university’s deadline and request the evidence of submission or revised result that admissions says it will accept.

Category 1 is not the same as IA remoderation

Category 1 covers eligible externally assessed work. Category 2 supplies copies rather than a re-mark; confirm its availability separately. Category 3 concerns remoderation of the school’s original internal-assessment sample under eligibility conditions, rather than an individual IA re-mark on demand.

A Category 1 re-mark can raise, lower or leave a grade unchanged. The IB requires written consent from the candidate or legal guardian before a request that may reduce a grade. Confirm the full quoted fee, consent process and school deadline before paying.

Remark first, retake second, or both

A re-mark checks existing work for a possible marking error. A retake is a new assessment attempt with preparation and school-entry requirements. Boundary distance or subject type alone cannot choose between them; the re-mark decision guide explains the evidence and grade risk.

You can investigate a review while checking host-school availability. Keep the retake registration cutoffs and cancellation terms visible: a pending EUR does not automatically extend entry deadlines or reserve a place.
