The short answer changed. The IB removed the old three-session rule in 2023, including for previous, current and future students.
There is no longer a general maximum of three examination sessions to complete the DP. A candidate can retake a subject in a future examination session, but each registration still depends on an IB World School, subject availability, current curriculum requirements and the restrictions confirmed by that school's coordinator.
Older articles and even older candidate-result PDFs still repeat a maximum of three sessions. The IB's current assessment FAQ explicitly says that rule was removed in 2023 for DP, CP and MYP candidates.
This removes the programme-wide three-session ceiling. It does not create an automatic right to sit any paper at any school or in any month.
A retake candidate needs an IB World School willing and able to register the requested subject, level and session. Schools are under no obligation to accept external candidates.
A subject may have changed curriculum since the original attempt. The current IB guidance says retake candidates must follow new subject requirements where a curriculum change applies.
The IB's May 2025 final statistical bulletin defines retake candidates as previous Diploma students seeking to improve one or more subjects and states that the highest grade obtained for a subject contributes toward the Diploma.
Ask the registering coordinator how the candidate record, carried-forward components and any changed curriculum will be handled in the exact session.
A future session can be May or November where the subject is available and a school accepts the candidate. Your original school may participate in only one session, so another host school can be necessary.
Every session has its own registration timeline and candidate-website PIN. A previous attempt does not reserve a place, preserve a school price or guarantee the same assessment route next time.
Retaking repeatedly makes sense only when the new result still changes an outcome: diploma conditions, a university subject requirement, admission timing or a professional recognition rule.
Before paying again, write down the exact grade needed, the session result date, the study changes since the previous attempt and the accepting school's confirmed registration. More attempts without a different preparation plan usually reproduce the same weak points.
