How many times can you retake IB exams?

Plan the next attempt, not an unlimited series

Removing the session ceiling does not reserve another exam entry. Each proposed attempt needs a valid subject route, a willing host and a preparation plan for the current syllabus. Keep the school’s confirmation and the assessment requirements for that specific session.

An illustrative student who needs Chemistry HL 6 but has twice scored 5 should identify what will be different this time: component weaknesses, timed practice, feedback and available study hours. Repeating the registration without changing the preparation plan is not evidence that the next outcome will improve.

• Ask the coordinator which syllabus applies to the next session.
• Confirm what happens to existing coursework under that syllabus.
• Ask admissions about any course-specific limits on attempts or timing.
• Compare the full new budget with the realistic benefit of the target result.

What changed in 2023

Older articles and even older candidate-result PDFs still repeat a maximum of three sessions. The IB's current assessment FAQ explicitly says that rule was removed in 2023 for DP, CP and MYP candidates.

A session is the May or November assessment period, not one individual paper. Retaking Chemistry and Mathematics in the same November period is one session with two subjects. The removal of the old ceiling does not create a right to any subject, school or assessment route.

What remains limited

A retake needs an IB World School willing and able to register your subject, level, response language and session. Schools do not have to accept external candidates. If your original school cannot help, check the route for retaking at another school before making travel plans.

A subject may have changed curriculum since the original attempt. The current IB guidance says retake candidates must follow new subject requirements where a curriculum change applies.

• Host-school acceptance.
• Subject and level offered in that session.
• Registration and school internal deadlines.
• Current syllabus and assessment components.
• Identity, records, payment and exam-day logistics.

Does the highest grade count?

The 2026 IB General Regulations, article 10.4, say that the highest subject/core grade contributes to the Diploma award. For example, a 5 followed by a 4 in the same subject and level does not replace the 5 with the lower grade for that award. University admission policies need a separate check.

This is a final-grade rule, not permission to combine the best written papers from different sittings. The IB assessment principles require all written examinations in the retaken subject to be resat. Ask the coordinator whether marks for non-examination components can carry forward under the current curriculum.

May, November and repeated attempts

A future session may be May or November if the subject, level, response language and host are available. Ask for each paper date and the host’s document, payment and registration deadlines. Do not assume that previous entry reserves a place or preserves a school price; the new session also has its own candidate-website PIN.

When another attempt is worth it

Before another attempt, establish whether the target result would still meet the Diploma condition, university offer or recognition requirement. Then compare the confirmed result timetable with the date that institution needs evidence.

University limits can differ: UCL defines resits as improving an already-awarded qualification and lists Economics BSc(Econ) among courses not accepting them. Ask admissions how its definition applies to your IB record and entry year.

Record the exact target grade, the accepting school’s confirmed entry, the complete budget and the preparation changes since the last attempt. Use specific evidence of progress, such as reviewed practice against assessment criteria, instead of assuming that another registration alone will improve the result.
