The IB landscape in Switzerland

Switzerland has an established multilingual IB school network. Geneva and Zurich are distinct search areas with different language and transport patterns; directory membership still does not prove that a school hosts external retakes.

Choose a city and realistic travel area

Worked admissions check: a hypothetical 34-point Diploma including three core points has a subject subtotal of 31. If your chosen university specifies a threshold excluding core points, compare 31, not 34, with that threshold. Then check its required HL/SL subject combination separately. This arithmetic is not an admission decision and does not establish the policy of every Swiss university.

A Swiss retake plan needs two score totals

The 2026/27 swissuniversities table distinguishes each university’s IB requirements and excludes bonus points from the stated subject-point thresholds. Keep both totals: six subject grades out of 42, and the Diploma total out of 45. They answer different questions.

Check the local primary source

• Hypothetical example: 33 total minus 2 core points = 31 subject points. Raising only TOK changes 33/45, not 31/42.
• Match each proposed retake to the exact university’s accepted subjects and HL requirements.
• Ask which intake can accept the later result and what language evidence is required. Do not infer admission from an exam-host acceptance.

Prepare a registration-ready file

A useful request states the registered subject name, HL or SL, May or November session, answer language, previous candidate details and any access-arrangement or component question. Vague requests make it harder for a coordinator to judge feasibility.

School internal cutoffs can be earlier than the final registration timetable. Begin early, keep documents ready and do not book non-refundable travel until a school has confirmed the venue and dates.

Check the admissions consequence

Swiss university recognition rules are specific about Diploma subjects, levels and points. Check the current swissuniversities table and the target institution rather than assuming that one improved grade cures every admission gap.

Limits of any location search

No country page can prove that a place is currently available. IB World School authorisation, participation in a particular exam session and willingness to register an external candidate are different facts.
