Build a travel area that works on exam day

A useful travel area can include the Lothians and rail-connected central Scotland. Check the first train against reporting time and price accommodation before accepting a venue that requires repeated early journeys.

Edinburgh: choose the interchange before choosing a room

Edinburgh’s council identifies Waverley and Haymarket as rail interchanges and the airport–Newhaven tram corridor. Those are different arrival options, not proof that a venue is centrally located. Before reserving accommodation, compare the onward journey from each relevant interchange to the confirmed exam entrance.

• Arriving by air: keep the airport transfer separate from the daily accommodation-to-exam journey.

Separate Edinburgh from the wider central-Scotland travel area

Begin with routes inside Edinburgh and the Lothians, then test rail-connected places separately. Waverley and Haymarket are useful interchange points, but the confirmed venue may sit well beyond either station and require a tram or bus connection.

The City of Edinburgh Council recommends planning ahead and allowing more time when the city is busy. For an exam, add a fixed reporting buffer and a second route rather than relying on the nominal timetable alone.

Price repeated journeys, not one successful route

One morning journey from Fife, Glasgow or elsewhere in central Scotland may appear workable. Repeat it against every paper date and arrival time; a subject with several components can expose the candidate to different weekday schedules and disruption points.

If the first available connection leaves almost no margin, compare a refundable night near the confirmed venue. The relevant comparison is total transport, accommodation and missed-exam risk, not the cheapest single fare.

Registration, session and document checks

Choose May or November using both school availability and the date your university needs the result. A school may participate in one session but not accept your subjects, level or external status.

Prepare a clean registration file before outreach. Ask the accepting coordinator which previous candidate details and component records can be retrieved; do not assume an IA or coursework arrangement follows from exam hosting.

Protect the university plan separately

For UCAS, enter achieved qualifications and any pending resit accurately. A host-school acceptance solves exam registration and venue logistics; it does not change a university's subject, grade or deadline requirements.

Ask the admissions office which result, evidence and deadline control your case. Do this before paying for travel or treating a host-school search as proof that an offer can still be met.
