Can you retake IB exams without buying tutoring?

Separate three decisions: how to prepare, who will host the examinations, and who will manage the official entry. You might revise independently and still need considerable administrative help. Alternatively, you might have a tutor but no school willing to register you. Solving either problem does not automatically solve the other.

Do not treat a commercial preparation package as a universal IB requirement. Equally, do not assume every school offers an exam-only arrangement: schools decide whether to accept external candidates and what support they can provide. Ask about the exact arrangement before comparing prices. This guide concerns returning candidates, not a first-time independent route to the full Diploma.

What does exam-only actually include?

An exam-only arrangement should identify the subjects and levels, the session, the examination venue and the party responsible for registering the entry. It should also explain how existing assessment records will be handled. A room reservation or payment receipt alone is not proof that the official subject entry is complete.

Ask what is excluded as carefully as what is included. Revision lessons, feedback on new work, oral assessments, access arrangements and transcript requests are separate questions. The table separates responsibilities; it is not a universal list of services included by every host school.

Can you carry forward your IA and other components?

An existing non-examination result and a new piece of coursework are different situations. The IB directs candidates to their coordinator for advice about internal assessment. Its assessment principles describe conditional carry-forward where curriculum and assessment requirements permit it; that is not automatic approval for your particular component.

Give the coordinator your previous session, exact subject and level, and the component you want to retain. Ask for written confirmation of what can be used in the new session. Do not infer eligibility from an old syllabus guide, an online discussion or a friend's experience in another subject. Written exam marks cannot simply be retained paper by paper when retaking a subject.

When might classes or coursework supervision still be necessary?

A request to submit new or revised non-examination work changes the practical requirements. The IB's assessment principles explain why the registering school needs to provide the required teaching, supervision and authentication. A private tutor's feedback is not a substitute for the school's assessment responsibilities.

If the curriculum has changed, check the requirements for your intended sitting before reusing old revision resources. Do not pay for an exam-host search on the assumption that it also includes new IA or oral work. Resolve that requirement first with a school able to support it. What should you confirm before booking an exam seat?

Prepare one complete information sheet rather than sending a vague request for an exam place. Keep the subject name, HL or SL, examination language and session together on each line. If you need access arrangements or have an unresolved component, flag it at the start so a coordinator can assess the request accurately.

Treat the school's registration cutoff and the university's evidence deadline as separate dates. Your personal study timetable must fit both. The published examination calendar tells you when papers occur; it does not confirm your entry or the host school's reporting time. Use the checklist and adapt the message below.
