IB Retake Registration: Contact Schools Yourself or Use a Search Service?

You can ask a willing IB World School about a retake place yourself, or use a service to help find one. Both routes still require school acceptance and official registration through the school. The useful comparison is who handles the search, what is included and whether the arrangement fits your subjects and session—not a promise that one route always costs less or guarantees a seat.

What are your options for finding an IB retake school?

Start with three practical options: return to your original school, approach other schools independently, or pay for help coordinating a host-school search. These are different ways to reach a registering school, not different versions of the IB qualification. In each case, acceptance must cover your actual subject, level, language and session.

The IB's school directory can identify authorised schools, but a listing is not evidence of external-candidate availability. Nor does an expression of interest mean registration is complete. Keep a distinction between a possible lead, an acceptance and an official entry confirmation.

When does contacting your original school make sense?

Your original coordinator may already have access to relevant candidate history and can explain what the school can offer. Ask whether it accepts returning candidates, operates your intended session and can handle the required components. Do not assume the answer stays the same from one year to the next.

If the school offers the right entry on workable terms, direct contact may avoid the need for a separate search. Check practical details nonetheless: moving country, university timing, travel or a changed syllabus may affect whether returning is sensible. Familiarity with the school is useful, but it is not a substitute for current written confirmation.

Prepare the registration checklist

What changes when you contact other schools yourself?

Independent outreach puts you in charge of identifying schools, supplying a consistent brief, tracking replies and resolving missing information. Use one row per school in a private checklist: contact date, subjects/session, component decision, cutoff, quoted inclusions and next action. A reply saying the school teaches Biology is not the same as accepting your Biology HL retake.

Avoid choosing solely by distance. Compare the actual paper timetable with travel and accommodation requirements, and clarify where exams take place. Send sensitive identity documents only through a channel confirmed by the school. If a school declines, distinguish a session or subject mismatch from a request that simply lacked enough information.

What does a managed host-school search do?

A managed search can coordinate outreach around a structured request. With IBretake, students select their countries, subjects and session; the service helps find a host school and the student follows the search through their account. School acceptance and official IB registration remain distinct from submitting a paid search request.

The service is not tutoring, coursework supervision or an admissions decision. It also does not guarantee placement. The potential benefit is help managing the search; it is not permission to bypass the coordinator's requirements. Read the current service terms and resolve any need for new IA or other supervised work before choosing an exam-host-only service.

How should you compare costs and what is included?

Compare equivalent services before comparing totals. For direct registration, ask the school for its written quote and inclusions: the IB states that schools set their own fees. There is no verified universal price in this comparison for independently contacted schools. A preparation bundle should be broken down into the services you actually need, without assuming all providers bundle the same things.

IBretake's published base formula is €150 per request plus €800 per selected subject exam. The examples below are IBretake checkout prices, not official IB fees, school averages or a claim to be the cheapest. They exclude valid promotional reductions and separate personal expenses. Count selected subjects, not each written paper as another €800 entry. Check the actual checkout and current terms before payment.

Selected subjectsCalculation before promotionsIBretake base total
1 €150 + 1 × €800 €950
2 €150 + 2 × €800 €1750
3 €150 + 3 × €800 €2550

Compare the complete commitment

  • Which subject entries and assessment components are included?
  • Who confirms the official registration, and by what date?
  • What are the school, payment and document cutoffs?
  • What extra travel, accommodation, bank or document costs will you incur?
  • What happens if no school accepts, you cancel, or your request changes?
  • Does the quoted currency and total match the amount you will actually pay?

Which route fits your situation?

Choose against the unresolved task. If you already have a suitable school, the problem may be preparation rather than finding a seat. If you have no willing school but a clear component plan, a search may help. If new coursework is required, finding someone with the right supervision responsibilities comes before comparing exam seats.

The examples below are hypothetical decisions, not testimonials. Keep a written record of why a route fits your subjects, deadline and budget. Do not treat money paid, the number of schools contacted or the existence of a school directory as proof of acceptance. Your decision should end with a clear next action and a named party responsible for confirming it.

Three hypothetical choices

Your original school can register you

The coordinator confirms your subjects, session and component plan, and travel is workable. Compare its quote and terms directly. You may not need a separate school-search service; focus on completing the entry and preparing for the papers.

You have a clear plan but no host school

Your component requirements are settled and you can travel to several countries. Compare the time you can give to direct outreach with the scope and price of a managed search. Neither route removes school acceptance or guarantees a particular location.

You need more than an exam seat

Your intended retake includes new coursework. Before paying for a host-only search, find out which registering school can provide the required supervision and assessment. A lower exam-seat quote does not solve an unsupported component.

Retake questions

Is contacting schools myself always cheaper?
Not necessarily. Compare actual written quotes and the services included, plus your travel and other personal costs. This article does not claim a universal cheapest route.
Does paying for a search mean I am registered for IB exams?
No. A search request, school acceptance and official registration are different stages. Obtain the accepting school's entry confirmation.
Is a school in the IB directory guaranteed to accept me?
No. The directory identifies authorised schools, not current external-candidate places. The school must confirm your exact entry.
