Can You Retake One IB Subject After Passing the Diploma?

Yes, you can retake one IB subject after passing the Diploma if an IB World School agrees to register you for an available future session. You do not need to repeat all six subjects to improve one grade. Confirm your subject, level, coursework requirements and university's acceptance of the later result before booking.

Passing the Diploma and meeting an offer are different

You may have the Diploma but miss a university's total, a required HL grade or a scholarship threshold. Target the condition that remains unmet. Your previous school is a sensible first contact, but no school is obliged to accept a retake candidate.

The IB's May 2025 provisional statistical bulletin counted 2,326 DP students in the retake registration category. This historical count does not show how many had already passed the Diploma or how often grades improved.

Would one subject change be enough?

The Diploma has up to 42 subject points plus three TOK/EE points. For the same subject and level, increasing your highest grade by one adds one point. These examples are hypothetical, with other results unchanged.

One subject does not mean one paper

Ask the coordinator which written examinations you must sit and how your IA, oral work or other components will be handled. An exam seat does not automatically permit new coursework or guarantee an old component can be retained.

Use the exact subject name, HL/SL and language. Mathematics AA and AI are different courses. Changing course or level needs its own entry and assessment checks; the examples above assume neither changes.

Check the university deadline before choosing a session

A school must confirm the subject and session it can offer, its registration cutoff and the applicable syllabus. Then ask the university whether it accepts that later result and the latest date official evidence can arrive.

Keep those dates separate from the examination timetable. A valid retake result may support a later application but arrive too late for your current offer.

What to send when asking for a place

Send your original session and school, exact subject and level, result, target session, coursework questions and university deadline. Request full fees and written registration confirmation.

IBretake can help search for a school to host selected retake exams in your chosen countries. It does not provide tutoring or new coursework supervision. If supervision is needed, resolve it with a school before relying on an exam booking.

Retake questions

Can I retake an HL subject after graduation?
Potentially, through a school accepting that subject, level and session. Confirm the assessment requirements and the university's acceptance.
What if my single-subject retake grade is lower?
The IB uses the highest subject or core grade for the Diploma award. A lower grade for the same subject and level does not replace the higher earlier one in that calculation.
Do I register directly with the IB?
No. An accepting IB World School manages the official entry. Graduation does not remove that requirement.
