What Happens If You Get a Lower IB Retake Grade?

If you get a lower IB retake grade, the IB uses your highest subject or core grade when determining the Diploma award. For the same subject and level, a lower new grade does not replace your higher earlier grade in that calculation. University admissions and the treatment of assessment components are separate questions.

Which IB grade counts after a retake?

The IB's retaking examinations guidance states that the highest subject or core grade contributes to the Diploma award. These hypothetical examples keep the subject and level unchanged; other award conditions still apply.

A lower result does not meet a higher offer

Suppose you have Mathematics AA HL at 5 and your university needs a 6. A retake grade of 4 leaves your highest grade at 5: the offer's subject condition is still unmet. Increasing another subject cannot replace a named mathematics requirement.

The attempt still costs time and money. Before booking, compare the target grade with your recent timed work and budget for an unchanged outcome as well as an improvement.

Can you combine your best marks from different sessions?

The highest-subject-grade rule does not mean choosing your best Paper 1 from one session and best Paper 2 from another. A subject retake is not automatically an entry for just the weakest written paper.

IA and other non-examination results have separate carry-forward rules. Ask the coordinator to confirm your complete assessment plan, especially if the syllabus or level changes. Do not calculate a new grade by mixing historical component marks yourself.

Will a university accept the highest result?

The IB's award rule does not set a university's admissions policy. Ask the institution how it treats multiple attempts, which records it requires and when the official result must arrive.

Use the official IB transcript process for the requested evidence. Do not assume that a lower attempt is hidden, that every university accepts later results, or that a candidate-portal screenshot is enough.

A remark can lower a grade: that is a different process

A remark, or Enquiry Upon Results, reviews work already assessed. It can move a grade down; the relevant request requires candidate consent through the coordinator. Do not apply the retake highest-grade rule as reassurance about a remark.

If your retake has already produced a lower grade, collect the results and confirm your award position with the coordinator, then your offer position with the university. Decide on any further attempt from those answers rather than assuming another sitting will solve the problem.

Retake questions

What if I get the same grade in my IB retake?
Your highest subject grade stays unchanged, so that subject adds no extra point to the Diploma total.
Does the highest-grade rule also cover the core?
Yes. The IB's published wording covers the subject or core requirement for determining the Diploma award.
Is there still a three-session IB retake limit?
The IB removed that rule in 2023. A further entry still depends on school acceptance, subject availability and current requirements.
