Can you improve an IB IA score before a retake?

Four checks that improve an investigation—not just its presentation

Start with the assessment criteria for the exact subject, level and examination session. A stronger layout cannot compensate for an unclear research question, weak evidence or an unsupported conclusion. Use the four checks below to decide what needs substantive revision before polishing the document.

For an illustrative measurement of 2.40 ± 0.05, the relative uncertainty is about 2.1%. That calculation becomes useful only when you explain what it means for the conclusion. If the effect you are discussing is smaller than the measurement uncertainty, avoid claiming that the data clearly establishes it. This example is a reasoning exercise, not a universal IA marking formula.

• Question: can the chosen method actually answer it?
• Evidence: are data, sources, units and processing traceable?
• Analysis: are assumptions and uncertainty considered where relevant?
• Evaluation: explain the effect of a limitation and a realistic improvement, not merely that human error exists.

IA is not the same as an exam paper

Internal Assessment is part of the subject assessment structure, but it is not normally something an external exam-hosting marketplace can simply recreate.

Whether an IA mark can carry forward, needs moderation context, or must be handled differently is a coordinator and IB policy question.

Questions to ask before searching

Ask your previous school what IA mark is on record, whether it can be carried forward, and whether any coursework component affects the retake. Ask a potential host school what it can and cannot register.

Do this before paying for travel, tutoring, or a placement assumption.
