AFTER IB RESULTS: A DECISION TREE FOR REMARKS, RETAKES AND UNIVERSITY PLANS
Results-day pressure makes unrelated decisions feel like one emergency. Separate them: verify the record, protect admissions deadlines, evaluate post-results services, and only then design a retake. The branches below make assumptions and downside risk visible.
Branch one: is the result record complete and understood?
Before comparing options, confirm the candidate details, subject grades, total points and core outcome. A diploma not being awarded can involve more than the total score, so use the official passing criteria and speak with the coordinator. Do not rely on a screenshot shared in a group chat or a third-party calculator as the record of truth.
Create one results sheet with the exact university condition beside the achieved result. Note whether the condition is a total, a subject-specific grade, an HL total, or a combination. A two-point total gap and a missing required HL grade are different problems even when both appear as ‘missed offer’.
1. Verify identity
Confirm the candidate session, subjects and levels.
2. Record outcome
Capture subject grades, total points, core status and diploma status.
3. Translate offer
Rewrite the university condition as exact measurable requirements.
4. Find the gap
Mark which requirement is missed and by how much.
Branch two: what can change on the admissions clock?
Contact the institution using the channel it specifies and ask what evidence it can consider, by when, and whether a pending post-results service changes the process. Keep the reply. Do not promise that a remark will finish before an admissions deadline, and do not assume the institution will automatically receive or act on later information.
A useful plan contains a fallback that is acceptable even if the current grade stays unchanged. That may include a later intake, another offer, a foundation route or a retake. The best branch depends on the candidate’s actual options, not on a generic ranking of outcomes.
| Scenario | Evidence needed | Main uncertainty | Fallback question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep current result | Official result and offer terms | Whether the institution has flexibility | Which alternative remains open? |
| Enquiry upon results | Coordinator advice, category, fee, deadline and risk | Result can stay the same and some services can change marks either way | What if no useful change occurs? |
| Retake | Host school, session, subject, level, fees and study baseline | Registration and improvement are not guaranteed | What if the grade remains unchanged? |
| Later application | Entry requirements and application calendar | Requirements may change | How will the intervening period add value? |
Branch three: is a retake operationally real?
A retake plan is not real until a school confirms that it can register the candidate for the exact subject, level and session. The school controls its capacity, administrative process and fees. Build a shortlist, provide complete candidate information and keep a record of replies.
Once registration is credible, test academic feasibility. Use timed diagnostic work to estimate the gap between current performance and the target. Allocate weeks to content repair, exam execution and full-paper rehearsal. A plan that contains only revision hours but no measured outputs is difficult to manage.
- Confirm the registering school before paying for unrelated preparation services.
- Use the current subject guide and session information, not an old course outline.
- Set weekly outputs: marked questions, corrected errors and timed papers.
- Schedule decision reviews so the plan can change when evidence changes.
- Keep admissions, registration and study deadlines in the same calendar.
- Write a fallback for an unchanged grade before the retake period begins.
